I recently read an article about the influence of disease on bathroom design in the United States. This article made me wonder about the role of Covid-19 on the home. What kinds of impacts might this current pandemic have on the design and construction of our homes? Will it change where people want to live? Will it change what features home owners value in new home construction? Will it change how people interact with and use their homes? Will it change the technology used inside the home? Are there any existing trends that this pandemic might accelerate or slow? This series of articles is an exploration of these thoughts. I have divided this article into a few posts to address the wide variety of potential impacts on housing. The following is a list of the topics of each of the articles in this series. Links to each topic will follow as the articles are posted.
- Home Space Planning
- Construction Practices
- Construction Assemblies
- Integrated Technology
- Interior Design
- Societal, Operational, and Behavioral Changes
To be clear this is only an exploration of potential impacts or changes resulting from the current pandemic and does not include other trends such as the complete electrification of homes except as spurred by conditions created during the current pandemic.
If you have any comments or additional thoughts on how our residences may change as a result of this pandemic please leave them below.
